Gil Marsalla, a musician, producer, and stage director from Nice, France, has become a leading ambassador of French musical heritage on the international stage. While others dismissed this repertoire as “dated,” Marsalla recognized its rare power: the timeless emotion of the great French chansons, brought to life in world-class productions for today’s global audiences.
His vision crystallized through travel. Wherever he performed, the melodies of Édith Piaf, Jacques Brel, and Charles Aznavour sparked the same fascination—proof that this heritage is universal.
“In the public’s eyes, France is Paris. Paris is Montmartre, and Montmartre is Piaf,” he explains. It is the iconic Parisian spirit visitors come to experience—and the emotion they want to take home with them.

How do you generate worldwide enthusiasm for a repertoire that sometimes struggles to find its place in France? Marsalla’s answer is simple: deliver excellence, make it accessible for venues, and let the songs do what they have always done—move people.
“I have produced our shows at L’Olympia many times and have delivered over a hundred sold-out international performances of Piaf! The Show,” Marsalla recalls. The message is clear: the audience is there—at home and around the world.
At the helm of Directo Prod, a deliberately lean and agile company, he chose a strategy that sets him apart from other major industry players. To win international markets, he studied what presenters and venues truly need: productions that travel easily, remain cost-effective, spotlight outstanding emerging talent, and upholdimpeccable artistic standards.
He develops and rehearses his productions in Nice, using halls provided in exchange for residency—keeping resources focused on artistry rather than overhead. He also maintains a strong presence at international trade fairs, where he builds relationships with agents, producers, and venue directors to bring his creations to new stages. For fifteen years, Gil Marsalla financed his international growth without investors—an approach that reflects the DNA of his success: discipline, passion, perseverance, and an unwavering love for French song and for France.
With a master’s degree in humanities from the University of Nice, jazz piano training at the regional conservatory, and a lifetime on stage performing, directing and producing, Marsalla brings both artistic credibility and entrepreneurial drive to every production.
Founded in 2001, Directo Prod—celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2026—first had to stand out amid strong local competition and the dominance of Parisian producers. Marsalla quickly made a strategic choice that changed everything: create original shows and take them directly to international audiences.
“The French speak very little English, so naturally, competition is less fierce abroad,” he jokes. “My colleagues who once laughed at me… are now the same ones calling to ask how to export their artists.”
Marsalla’s productions have become powerful ambassadors of francophonie. Performed in French, they carry the language and its cultural imagination to millions of spectators worldwide.
For years, French institutions struggled to grasp the model.
“For years, I had to produce without funding… even at Carnegie Hall in New York. They told us it was impossible, and yet we did it.”
Support is now arriving—slowly but surely. The next step is already in motion: producing shows directly in each country rather than only selling them, a strategy he has already successfully launched in North America and Europe.
This international recognition is also reflected in the trust of the world’s leading artistic agencies, who continue to seek out and program his productions.

On February 7, 2024, the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, presented Gil Marsalla with the insignia of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres—an honor recognizing more than twenty years dedicated to sharing French musical heritage with audiences in over 80 countries.
“Every morning, while drinking my coffee, I watch my birthplace, Nice Nord, come to life and reflect on the journey. Thanks to my country, thanks to French chanson, and thanks to all of you, I have realized my French Dream,” he says. In his office, a piece by Nice artist Ben captures the spirit of this journey: “I am not crazy,” written in white on a black background—a daily reminder that bold vision, backed by hard work, can become reality.
“For more than 20 years, I have traveled the world with our productions celebrating francophone musical heritage. On five continents, in French, I have seen audiences transported by this repertoire—its words, its emotion, its unique musicality. It is a joy to witness the renewed global interest in this exceptional heritage.”
With a proven track record across the world’s premier venues, Directo Prod continues to bring the greatest voices of French chanson to new audiences. For programming, partnerships, or touring opportunities, connect with Gil Marsalla and his team.
